Before the Autumn sets in. Bees are busy at work getting the hive ready for the winter months.

Autumn has arrived.
St Giles Fair 2017
It’s that time of year again. St Giles Fair rocked up to mark the end of Summer and the change to Autumn. I went on a photowalk with the Oxford Photowalk group on Monday Night, not that we really stuck together given how crowded St Giles Fair gets. I concentrated on long exposures as I like to see what patterns of light I can capture as the rides spin round at speed. Below is the King Ride taken at f/18, ISO 100 with a 5 second exposure time. You can see how busy things with the wisps of people walking past.

A Daytime Long Exposure
I wanted to get a sense of the flow of tourists in Oxford last summer. So how to do it ? Mount my camera to a tripod and use fast shutter speeds to try and blur motion ? No. I reached for a 10 stop ND filter and picked a spot where I knew I could set up my camera far enough away to not get in the way but close enough to capture the flow I wanted. It took some experimentation (liveview is good for working out exposures sometimes when long shutter speeds are involved), but I settled on a 20 second exposure at f/16. It took several minutes to get the shot I’m most happy with.
It was taken on one of the side streets to the St Mary the Virgin Church, which is a popular destination for tourists. Mostly due to the views the tall tower of the Church allows. I settled on the side street that has the Old Bank Hotel in view alongside the Traffic lights as this is always a busy spot. Set up my tripod, focused, screwed on the filter, plugged in my shutter release cable and then hoped for the best. This was the first time I’d used my 10 Stop ND filter on a bright sunny day away from fast flowing water. I was hoping a few tourists would stand around trying to figure out where they needed to go, while others walked past. Usually a mixture of locals going about their daily business and tourists in search of Colleges further up the High Street.
Endeavour
I was on my way to Holywell Cemetery but as I was walking down Holywell Street I came across filming for Endeavour. I could have carried on to the Cemetery but I decided to hang around for a while and watch the process of a scene being filmed. A lot of takes, sometimes due to an actor fluffing a line or a joke being told. But an interesting experience. They were filming scenes in a car and scenes outside the Holywell Music Room.

Weymouth Beach
Weymouth’s Beach goes from being fine sand to shingles to large pebbles. Here is a couple walking away from the sandy part of the beach to the more rocky area. You can see some of the beach huts in the distance along with the Church Spire peeking above the beach front houses. Most of which are Bed and Breakfasts. The building on the beach is where a beach shop is located (selling the usual items like buckets and spades), a restaurant on the building’s first floor with an arcade underneath. It’s also where public toilets are located. Everything you need for a day at the beach.
